Movie Talk / changes to Podcasts in iTunes for iOS6
« on: June 16, 2012, 09:17:23 AM »
Could change the way we listen to the Weekly podcast, but perhaps it just means a different delivery to an app instead of to iTunes...

Movie Talk / movie theaters in Japan
« on: May 23, 2012, 05:03:17 AM »
my latest YT vlog talks about movie theaters in Japan and how amazing I found it that one of my college students hadn't been to a theater in 3 years.

But reading the comments left on YouTube after just the first day, it seems that many don't go to the movies, avoid 3D and are just as happy to watch on DVD.  I'm sure that's not the case with the forums crowd here and I don't get that attitude, which will most likely prompt a follow up vlog.

Enjoy!

« on: May 20, 2012, 03:08:48 PM »
Hey Gang -

Checked in at 6:05pm your time (7:05am Monday my time) to listen to the new podcast live, but it seems y'all are taking the week off, unless you recorded at a different time.  I'll try to catch you next week.

Movie Talk / Woody Allen documentary
« on: May 12, 2012, 08:43:22 PM »
Just wanted to recommend an excellent documentary I just watched via iTunes.

It's simply called "Woody Allen: A Documentary" and it's in two parts.

Part One chronicles his early life, start in TV, his days as a stand-up comedian and his early films,
up thru the breakthru of Annie Hall (which did deserve the Oscar over Star Wars, even tho I am a huge SW fan)
and Manhattan.

Part Two takes up in the early 80s to the present day.

Fascinating stuff, great interviews with Woody and his friends and co-stars, lots of film clips, etc.

You can buy it of course, but I rented it for $6 ($3 each), and it totals about 4 hours.

Not sure where this was originally, maybe PBS, but it is well worth watching!

Movie Talk / Mother's Day Podcast
« on: May 12, 2012, 08:30:30 PM »
Hey Gang -

Just wondering if you're planning a podcast for May 13, which is Mother's Day in America.

If Rafe can tweet yes or no earlier in the day, then I can plan on not waking up so early.  ;)

6pm Sunday night for you is 7am Monday morning for me here in Japan,
but it was fun being in the chat room last week, so would like to participate again.
(5pm start time is even better for me, but both are better than the old 2pm start time)

See ya,
Jason

Movie Talk / 30 min or less
« on: April 24, 2012, 10:06:22 PM »
I just watched 30 Minutes or Less last night on DVD.  It's a new release here in Japan.

It is the poster child for a perfectly ordinary and average movie.

It's not terribly good or particularly funny,
but it's also not bad or overly boring.

It's just average.

It's the kind of thing you watch on cable or dvd and are glad you didn't spend $10 seeing it in the theater.

I realize that some of these actors are famous because of their TV roles, but I really don't know who they are, except of course for Jesse Eisenberg and Danny McBride.

Not as many comedies make it out over here - far less than sci-fi or action or even drama.
So I'm always starved for some good comedies when I'm scanning the racks for something to rent.
(yes, I still go to a shop to rent my DVDs - there is no service like Netflix or On-demand in rural Japan)

Next up for me to try is Clooney in the Descendants. It actually opens in Japanese movie theaters in May,
so I decided to just DL it from iTunes.

Movie Talk / Podcast on Sunday April 22nd?
« on: April 21, 2012, 07:17:06 PM »
Hey Gang,

Wondering if y'all plan to record a new podcast today?

And if so, did you change the start time to 4pm your time?
The "Podcast live" section of the site says 2pm for the start time, but I thought you changed it.

Will try to be in the peanut gallery today if I can...

Movie Talk / any good recent BD purchases?
« on: April 18, 2012, 12:44:41 AM »
Anybody buy anything really good on Blu Ray recently?

I'm not talking about the movie, which recommends itself based on its merits -
I'm talking more about a great disc that enhances the viewing with great features and/or extras?

Other than the obligatory Star Wars box set recently (staggers to think how much of my money I've given George Lucas over the years), I just got a nice little box from Amazon.
(I live in Japan, but I mostly buy my BDs from America since we share the same region, but all the extras and menus will be in English).
Inside the box was the new Muppets movie - loaded with extras I can't wait to watch.
I haven't even seen the actual film yet either - as it hasn't even opened in theaters here.
That happens a lot - a movie will open and be on DVD before it opens theatrically in Japan.  :(

Anyway - I also picked up the new Battle Royale 4-disc complete set - which has a bevy of extras.
And for $6 on Amazon, I picked up T2 - The Skynet Edition.
I've seen Terminator 2 countless times, but for $6 it's a worthy title for the collection.
I just can't get the picture-in-picture commentary to work on my player.
And you need some kind of code to get the super-deluxe version of the movie to play,
but I don't have my BD player hooked up to the internet.  I guess I could search the net for the code...

Anyway - let me know if you have anything to recommend.

Cheers,
Jason

Movie Talk / Battleship - an early review from Japan
« on: April 17, 2012, 10:42:26 PM »
Hello Everybody,

About once a year, an American movie opens in Japan before it opens in America.

This year so far, that movie is Battleship - based on the board game by Hasbro.

I thought we in Japan might be getting this movie early (about a month before it opens in the States)
because Tadanobu Asano, a fairly famous Japanese actor who played Hogun in Thor, appears in a lead role.
But I think many other countries also had this movie open this past weekend.

I took along my camera to the theater, and shot this 3-minute review right after seeing it.

Enjoy!

Television Talk / Downton Abbey
« on: February 07, 2012, 06:58:48 AM »
Anyone here watching Downton Abbey?

I heard so many good things, I bought Season One on iTunes (not on DVD yet in Japan)
and raced thru all 7 episodes in a week.

Now I'm caught up and making my way thru Season Two.

One word - fantastic!!

Such a great show - very soapy, but so well written and acted.

Can't wait for each new show - hate it when they're over.

Hands down the best hour-drama on TV right now.

Television Talk / Teach - Tony Danza
« on: October 14, 2010, 04:02:44 AM »
Rafe -

Just wondering if you (or others) have caught this reality show on A&E.

Tony Danza takes over an English class in a Philadelphia high school and tries to learn to be a teacher.

I don't have near as much experience teaching in American schools as I do teaching in Japanese schools,
but so far the show has me interested.

I got to see the Pilot for free on iTunes and then downloaded the 2nd episode for $2 and will probably end up watching the series.

Better at least than My Generation, which I also downloaded the Pilot for free, then paid for the 2nd episode and now see
that the show has already been cancelled.

Television Talk / True Blood
« on: August 18, 2010, 02:24:23 PM »
My niece got me the Season One DVD set for my birthday in July and I burned thru all 12 episodes in about a week.

I'm not a huge Vampire lore fan, but I really am enjoying this show.

Anyone watched em all?  Does it keep up the quality and stay interesting?  (spoiler free responses please)

I'll buy the Season Two box set and take it with me to Japan to have something to watch when I want to hear some English.  :)

Movie Talk / Predators
« on: July 06, 2010, 11:09:46 AM »
Anyone else excited about seeing this new flick?  I am!

I read the 4-part prequel comic put out by Dark Horse this last month and I think they have a chance at making a really decent flick to stand along-side the original.

Movie Talk / going to Comic Con - what do you want to hear about?
« on: June 30, 2010, 01:11:02 PM »
If you were going to the San Diego Comic Con later this month, what would you be excited about seeing movie-wise?

I know they'll be plugging Scott Pilgrim, Green Lantern, Thor, Green Hornet, Expendables, and Tron.

Not sure what they'll be flogging TV-wise...

I have a 4-day pass, but won't be spending all my time in Hall H - I like comics too, so plenty for me to do and see.

Plus I have to put in a day of work at a shop's booth - I used to work for the shop and the owner is hooking me up with the 4-day pass in exchange.
So if you're going, stop by the Comic Gallery booth and say hi.

If anyone wants info on a specific event/movie, then let me know and I'll do my best.
